KARIOI CANYONING
RAGLAN ROCK

Karioi Canyoning
Experience one of Raglan’s Hidden Gem Adventures!
Come and experience the adventure everyone is talking about! Karioi Canyoning is a guided journey into an ancient volcanic landscape, where a lava-formed creek winds its way through lush native bush, below the majestic Mt Karioi. Rain or shine, it’s an unforgettable way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Aotearoa and discover a side of Whaingaroa, Raglan, that few ever get to explore.
Once suited up in warm, thick 5mm wetsuits and jackets, your adventure begins! Step into the flowing creek and follow it downstream by scrambling, climbing, and abseiling your way through multiple natural obstacles like volcanic boulders and fresh flowing waterfalls! It’s a physically engaging experience that invites you to step out of your comfort zone and into nature’s playground!
As you move deeper into the canyon, the surrounding bush comes alive with vibrant greenery, the sound of flowing water, and the calls of native birds like the tūī and pīwakawaka. Your experienced and passionate guide will lead the way, keeping you safe, supported, and informed, while sharing fascinating insights into the area’s ecology, geology, and cultural history. You’ll learn about traditional uses of native plants, the volcanic origins of the landscape, and the deep connection this whenua (land) holds.
Whether you’re new to canyoning or have some experience under your belt, the Karioi Canyon is suitable for those with moderate fitness and a sense of adventure. The route is dynamic, interactive, and always changing with the conditions, making each trip unique.
Our guides are fully trained, friendly, and committed to creating a memorable and meaningful experience. With a strong focus on safety, environmental respect, and connection to place, they ensure that your journey is not only exhilarating but also enriching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience?
No prior canyoning experience is required for either of our Karioi Canyoning trips. Our guides will teach you everything you need to know, including abseiling, movement techniques, and how to stay safe in the canyon environment.
What fitness level do I need?
A moderate level of fitness is helpful. You’ll be moving over uneven terrain, climbing, swimming, and abseiling. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we can advise based on your ability.
Can children participate?
Children aged 8 and above can join our canyoning trips. They must be comfortable in water and able to follow guide instructions. For younger participants, please contact us to discuss suitability as water levels do vary.
How long do the tours last?
Our Karioi Canyoning Trips typically run for around 4 hours. This covers gearing up, heading to the canyon site, and your full time in the canyon.
Is canyoning safe?
Yes. Canyoning is an adventure activity, but we operate under strict safety procedures, industry best practice, and qualified instruction. All equipment is checked before every trip, and our guides are trained in rescue techniques and emergency response.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You don’t need to be an expert swimmer, but you should be comfortable in water. Our guides support you throughout the trip, and buoyancy from the wetsuit helps keep you afloat.
What should I bring?
Bring togs, a towel, and closed‑toe footwear that can get wet. Trainers, running shoes, or walking shoes are perfect. If you don’t have suitable footwear, please let us know in advance and we’ll provide some for you.
Rash guards/ surf tops are great as added protection against the sun or an extra warmth during the shoulder seasons.
We provide all technical canyoning safety equipment, including wetsuits, harnesses, helmets etc.
Where do we meet?
All canyoning trips start at the Raglan Rock Base. From there, we’ll all head out to the canyon.
What if the weather is bad?
Canyoning is weather‑dependent. Heavy rain can cause unsafe water levels in the canyon. If conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll contact you as early as possible to reschedule or offer alternative options.
Do you take photos?
Yes! Our guides often take photos during the trip, and we share them with you afterwards at no extra cost.
